Global Wave Interactions in Isentropic Gas Dynamics

چکیده
We give a complete description of nonlinear waves and their pairwise interactions in isentropic gas dynamics. Our analysis includes rarefactions, compressions and shock waves. Because the waves are arbitrarily large, we describe the change of states across the wave exactly, without resolving the characteristic patterns. We similarly describe the states between nonlinear waves in any pairwise interaction. When the strengths and reflected waves are described correctly, we show that whenever two (arbitrary) nonlinear waves of the same family interact, their strengths simply add. Also, if a wave crosses a simple wave (rarefaction or compression) of the opposite family, its strength is unchanged, and the change in the opposite simple wave is explicitly given by exact formulae. In addition, we analyze the crossing of two arbitrary shocks. We obtain bounds for the outgoing middle state, and use this to estimate the outgoing wave strengths in terms of the incident strengths. Our estimates are global in that they apply to waves of arbitrary strength, and they are uniform in the incoming middle state. In particular, the estimates continue to hold as the middle state approaches vacuum.

متن کاملNo Tvd Fields for 1-d Isentropic Gas Flow
We prove that isentropic gas flow does not admit non-degenerate TVD fields on any invariant set M(r0, s0) = {r0 < r < s < s0}, where r, s are Riemann coordinates. A TVD field refers to a scalar field whose spatial variation VarX(φ(τ(t,X), u(t,X))) is nonincreasing in time along entropic solutions. The result is established under the assumption that the Riemann problem defined by an overtaking s...
متن کاملMixed hyperbolic-elliptic systems in self-similar flows
From the observation that self-similar solutions of conservation laws in two space dimensions change type, it follows that for systems of more than two equations, such as the equations of gas dynamics, the reduced systems will be of mixed hyperbolicelliptic type, in some regions of space. In this paper, we derive mixed systems for the isentropic and adiabatic equations of compressible gas dynam...
متن کاملConvergence of Second - Order Schemes for Isentropic Gas Dynamics
Convergence of a second-order shock-capturing scheme for the system of isentropic gas dynamics with L°° initial data is established by analyzing the entropy dissipation measures. This scheme is modified from the classical MUSCL scheme to treat the vacuum problem in gas fluids and to capture local entropy near shock waves. Convergence of this scheme for the piston problem is also discussed.

We study in this paper some numerical schemes for hyperbolic systems with unilateral constraint. In particular, we deal with the scalar case, the isentropic gas dynamics system and the fullgas dynamics system. We prove the convergence of the scheme to an entropy solution of the isentropic gas dynamics with unilateral constraint on the density and mass loss. We also study the non-trivial steady ...
